Jamaica's Poet Laureate takes to the stage in Bristol

Professor Mervin Morris, Jamaica’s Poet Laureate, was warmly received recently by a rapt audience of about 650 at the Bristol Poetry Institute’s Annual Reading for 2014.

Professor Morris read at the event which was held at the Great Room of the Wills Memorial Building, University of Bristol, England.

He and emerging Jamaican poets, Mel Cooke, Yashika Graham and Richard “Dingo” Dingwall, were invited by the city of Bristol to participate in ‘Jamaica Rising’, a programme of events celebrating a new Bristol-Jamaica cultural partnership.

Jamaica Rising is co-ordinated by Tangent Books, Culture Khan, Bristol Festival of Literature and the University of Bristol, and is supported by the Ministry of Tourism and Entertainment.

Professor Morris, widely respected throughout the Caribbean and beyond, has been enjoying a renewal of interest in his work, since his appointment earlier this year as Jamaica’s Poet Laureate. This appointment runs for three years.
