Dominican Republic's minimum wage increase called "excessive"

Dominican Republic Industries Association has described the 20 per cent increase in the minimum wage as excessive, saying it will lead to layoffs.

The AIRD has demanded an industrial reclassification since 2004, to establish a salary according to a company’s sales volume and number of workers.

A spokesperson indicated that the minimum wage should be established according to the inflation level, which is around 4.5 per cent.

The association noted that the increase should be 60 per cent above the inflation level.
