2019 hurricane season likely to be less active than normal

A Caribbean climatologist has said the 2019 hurricane season is likely to be less active than normal with 10 to 13 named tropical storms possible.

Cédric Van Meerbeeck, Climatologist at the Caribbean Institute for Meteorology Meteorology and Hydrology, told the Caribbean Media Corporation that the data suggest that the El Nino phenomenon will occur in the Pacific ocean and this generally leads to drier conditions in the Caribbean.

He said there is also a possibility of reduced activity in terms of hurricanes and tropical storms.

Mr Van Meerbeeck said there is still some uncertainty at this time and the institute is advising residents of the region to keep updating themselves.

He said more information will be available about the outlook for the hurricane season by August.

The 2019 Atlantic Hurricane Season officially begins on June 1.
