Academics predict general election before year end

Dr. Jermaine McCalpin and Nadeen Spence

Two academics and political analysts have predicted that the next general election will be held before the end of  the year.

They have based their opinion on the current political climate plus the utterances from the two main parties.

Lecturer in the Department of  Government at UWI Mona, Dr. Jermaine McCalpin, bases his reason on several factors.

However, says there may be a cultural reason this time for the governing party to choose a date this year.

"I would believe that in the next two or so months we might see and election called or certainly one announced.   part of the reasoning for me is that much of the election is about timing ..... most of our elections over the last couple of years have been called between September and December," he said.

Meanwhile, University Lecturer Nadeen Spence, also shares the view that an election will take place this year, but this is based on her analysis of  the activities of  both main parties.

She has also used the current economic climate to assess the likelihood of  the governing party calling the election.

"I think that there is a certain kind of movement to suggest that in terms of the ruling party that they are the best that they have been..... if I were them and in terms of how it looks now, this would be the time to call the elections," Spence said.

A General Election is constitutionally due next year.
