Buff Bay cemetery closed temporarily

Dionne Hunter, Councillor for the Buff Bay Division

The Buff Bay cemetery in Portland has been closed temporarily.

The decision was made after a site visit to clear additional lands for graves revealed there may be an interference with underground water sources.

Nicole Condeppa, Director of Planning at the Portland Municipal Corporation, said the recommendation to close the cemetery was made following a report by the Water Resources Department.

Speaking at the Municipal Corporation's meeting on Thursday, Councillor for the Buff Bay Division Dionne Hunter, said residents have threatened roadblocks to protest the closure.

She said residents complain that other cemeteries in the region are refusing burials.

But the Portland Municipal Corporation has advised that burials can take place at the Hopie and St. Margaret's Bay cemeteries.
