Bunting calls for JCF to improve vetting of officers

Peter Bunting
Faced with what has been described as an alarming number of prospective police recruits being associated with criminal elements, Jamaica's parliamentary opposition wants the constabulary to improve its vetting processes.

Peter Bunting, Opposition Spokesman on National Security, told RJR News that the improved vetting process should not only be applied at the time persons are trying to enter the Force.

"We should look at expanding the use of polygraph testing and other background vetting, not just at the intake stage, but periodically - either when persons come up for promotions; when they're going into sensitive units, such as narcotics; (or) when they are up for re-enlistment and there may be any questions about their integrity," he said.

On Thursday, Police Commissioner Dr. Carl Williams revealed that a recent vetting process for applicants to the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) revealed that scores had links to gangs and other major crimes.

He said many of the individuals had received glowing recommendations from Justices of the Peace as well as ministers of religion.
