Christiana Potato Growers Association seeking to stop sale of its building

Wentworth Gabbidon, Chairman of the Christiana Potato Growers Cooperative Association, speaking with RJR News
The Christiana Potato Growers Association is in a race against time to halt the sale of the building which houses its offices.

The sale is reportedly being carried out by the National People's Cooperative (PC) Bank.

The Association has sought the intervention of the Member of Parliament, Audley Shaw.

The PC Bank had foreclosed on a loan to the Association. It now owes $83 million.

Wentworth Gabbidon, Chairman of the Christiana Potato Growers Cooperative Association, said members of the association protested on Thursday "because they are not satisfied with the way things are breing done, in terms of the banks trying to sell the buildings, in spite of the fact that they are owed money."

"We are looking at alternatives to the selling of the building and how they can deal with it; and at the same time, earn funds to repay the loan to the bank," he said.

Meanwhile, Mr. Gabbidon said he was assured by Mr. Shaw that the building would not be sold on Thursday.

He said the association is also looking at other avenues to earn revenue from the building.

"We are currently looking at making arrangements with a company to lease the entire building and from that, we hope that we'll be able to earn enough to make payments on the loan," he asserted.

He said if the building is sold, the association will still be left indebted to other entities.
