Education Minister asks schools, parents to be reasonable with dress code

Education Minister Ronald Thwaites has asked school administrators and parents to be reasonable in dealing with concerns over the length of  uniforms being worn by school girls.

Since the start of  the academic year, there have been reports of scores of primary and high school students being sent home for not wearing skirts less than two inches below the knee.

According to Mr. Thwaites, schools have the responsibility for setting rules regarding dress and general conduct. He says there should be strict adherence to discipline in schools.

“We have too laxed in the past but we must be reasonable with each other, we need to ensure modesty and that should be the dominating concern. I’m not able to judge whether a skirt is too long or if pants are too tight. But we just ask parents and teachers to be reasonable with each other,” he said.

The Education Minister  who was a guest on RJR’s Hotline programme, also urged administrators not to deny students access to school.
