Five still in custody from Newlands operation

Superintendent Leighton Grey, head of Operations for the St. Catherine South Police

Five of the eleven people who were detained on Wednesday during an operation in Newlands, Portmore, St. Catherine remain in custody.

The St. Catherine South Police say the men are from outside the community, so they are collaborating with other police divisions to determine if any of the men are wanted for crimes elsewhere.

Superintendent Leighton Grey, head of Operations for the St. Catherine South Police, said operations will continue in Newlands until normality is restored to the community.

The operations are in response to the flare-up of violence in the community in the last two weeks.

Superintendent Grey sought to assure residents of the area that the police will do "everything in their power" to preserve their safety and security.
