Guard who killed mentally ill man taken off frontline duty

Security company Guardsman says the guard involved in Friday's incident in which a mentally ill man was killed in St. Elizabeth has been taken off frontline duty pending the outcome of investigations.

Haile Clacken, 38, of Southfield in the parish, was shot and killed about 4:30 p.m. in Cheapside.

Reports are that the armoured truck was in Junction conducting its rounds, when the man climbed on to the top of the vehicle.

As the truck proceeded to Cheapside, the team inside the armoured vehicle discovered that he was on the top and maneuvered the vehicle to get him off.

It is alleged that during a confrontation, a member of the team shot him.

He was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Residents, who got upset at the incident, quickly blocked the road, forcing the armed guards to hide inside the armoured truck for about three hours until the police arrived.
