HAJ to begin construction of Catherine Estates this year

Prime Minister Andrew Holness

Depositors who have been waiting for years for homes promised by the Housing Agency of Jamaica (HAJ) are being told construction will begin before the end of this year.

More than 600 people paid between $400,000 and $490,000 in deposits for homes in what was to be called Bernard Lodge Estates.

However, the development was terminated in 2013 because of  inactivity on the part of the contractors.

On Tuesday, the HAJ, Housing Ministry and China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) signed a contract to restart the project, which is now to be called Catherine Estates.

Prime Minister Andrew Holness said 47 depositors who continued to hold out hope the development would be completed will get the units at the original price.

Some 1,650 units are to be built under the project which is slated to cost $9.5 billion.

Mr. Holness said the houses will be affordable, going in the region of $5.5 million for the studio and $6.6 for the one bedroom unit.
