Health Ministry clarifies who is required to pay at public health facilities

The Health Ministry has provided clarification in relation to who is considered a private patient and would therefore be required to pay fees at public health facilities.

The Medical Association of Jamaica (MAJ) had expressed concern that not all patients who initially see a private doctor, can afford to pay for treatment at hospital.

It also said there are emergency cases in which patients will see a private doctor before continuing treatment at a public facility.

However, in a release, the Health Ministry said any patient referred to a public institution, and not a particular doctor, should be assumed to be public unless otherwise stated.

It said the term 'private patient' refers to a patient who is paying a specifically named doctor or dentist in a public hospital for private services.

In the meantime, the ministry said, for patients with insurance, only the amount payable by the insurance company is applicable and there is no charge to the patient.
