Importation of illegal alcohol reduced, guns still a problem - JCA

Major Richard Reese, Commissioner of Customs
The Jamaica Customs Agency (JCA) is reporting a reduction in the illegal importation of alcohol but is still facing a challenge as it relates to guns.

However, Major Richard Reese, Commissioner of Customs, has said the scanning methods are detecting guns and ammunition.

"Some of the interests are saying, why are we x-raying things twice. Now if we x-ray the container, then we x-ray each palette or barrel and we keep finding guns, then it tells you that we need to continue doing what we're doing. For each gun that you recover, it could be as much as 20, 30, 40 lives.

"Now going forward, we need to upgrade our scanning equipment for our containers, and this is something that is being actively pursued with the Ministry of Finance," Major Reese explained.

He added that if containers are scrutinised more, before leaving their port of origin, it would reduce the number of illegal weapons entering Jamaica.

Major Reese was speaking on Monday at a Kiwanis Club meeting.
