Education Minister Ruel Reid has challenged educators, parents and community members to invest in children at the early childhood level.
Senator Reid also encouraged them to ensure children remain in school and pursue higher education.
The minister was speaking at the official opening of the Lloyds Basic School in St. Thomas on Thursday.
Some 29 students, aged three to six years, are to benefit from the facility which was built by teams from Food for Poor in Canada and Jamaica. The building is able hold up to 60 students.
The facility has three classrooms, separate bathrooms for students and teachers, an office, sick bay and kitchen.
Security fencing and playground equipment are to be installed.
The students were previously housed in one room at an abandoned house which had a termite infested roof.
