Jamaica won't ban Brazilian beef - Samuda

Karl Samuda

Industry and Commerce Minister Karl Samuda has said Jamaica has no plan to ban the importation of meat products from Brazil at this time.

His comment follows Thursday's decision by the United States to halt imports of Brazilian beef after a high percentage of shipments failed safety checks.

But: "Jamaica will not be imposing any ban on beef. We have done our tests; we have carried out surveys extensively and we are satisfied that our surveys carry the level of integrity that would cause us to continue to do the importation of corned beef into the country," the minister assured.

He insisted that the matter does not affect Jamaica because the country does not import fresh beef, but processed meat, such as corned beef.
