JCTU wants public sector compensation review complete before 2021 wage negotiations

Helene Davis Whyte

Helene Davis Whyte, President of the Jamaica Confederation of Trade Unions (JCTU), wants the public sector compensation review to be completed ahead of the new wage negotiation cycle which begins April next year.

Finance Minister Dr. Nigel Clarke wants the review wrapped up by December.

Mrs Davis Whyte said the results of the review will provide the base on which trade unions enter wage negotiations with the government.

"I think the government needs to remember that when the JCTU signed the heads of agreement with the government for a four-year term, it was with the understanding that when we would have finished this four-year term, things would be in place to ensure that public sector workers would be able to know how their (pays) are valued, vis-à-vis both private sector and also looking at pay equity within the sector," she insisted.

Mrs Davis Whyte believes the government has sufficient time to complete the compensation review before April 2021.
