JPS engineer appears in court on meter reading racket

A Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS) engineer who was charged in connection with a meter reading racket appeared in court this afternoon where the case against him was mentioned.

Donovan Carson is charged with 16 counts of  breaches of  the Cyber Crime Act and conspiracy. He was charged in February after the JPS reported that someone had gained unauthorised access to its computers and adjusted its meter reading system. The company said it lost more than J$10 million as a result of the racket.

Investigators reported that from July 2013 to October last year, Mr Carson gained access to the accounts of  14 JPS customers and reversed their meter readings. The customers, who were connected to the JPS' Advanced Metering Infrastructure, ended up paying less on their electricity bills.

JPS said the specialised meters can be read remotely and only authorised personnel are allowed on the system.

Mr Carson, who has denied the allegations, is to return to court on September 30.
