JUTC not yet up to speed with Smarter Cards but students to ride free

the Jamaica Urban Transit Company, JUTC, will be deploying additional buses in the Kingston Metropolitan Transport Region to accommodate the increase in passenger load with the reopening of schools.

JUTC Chairman, Reverend Garnett Roper, says personnel will be on routes to ensure that buses run on schedule.
And students who have not yet received their Smarter Cards will be allowed to ride free on JUTC buses today.

On the weekend thousands of commuters flocked JUTC locations to apply for Smarter Cards to meet yesterday's deadline.
Reverend Roper says the State-owned bus company is encouraged by the number of applications as it moves towards a cash less system. More than 140-thousand Smarter Cards have been distributed by the company.

Meanwhile, the JUTC says all is in place for the roll out of its vehicle tracking system for the start of the school year. The Automatic Vehicle Locator, AVL, will improve fleet management and enhance the company's service to the public. The system has been piloted on several routes and allows the JUTC full control of its vehicles.
This includes tracking the movement and speed of buses.

AVL systems can also be used to increase the accountability of field personnel and boost the efficiency of a company's dispatching procedure. The JUTC says in time passengers will be able to use their smart phones to track bus routes and Smarter card usage.
