Maxfield Avenue residents protest lack of street lights

Resident of Maxfield Avenue, speaking with RJR News
Residents of Maxfield Avenue in Kingston protested the lack of street lights in the community Tuesday morning. The residents are worried about their safety with the absence of the lights.

A resident of the community told RJR News the protest was sparked by an incident that took place on Monday night in which gunmen, who were allegedly engaged in a shootout in nearby, fled to their community. The resident said this caused fear and concern.

The Jamaica Public Service (JPS) removed illegal connections to four transformers last Thursday. However, it said when it removed the illegal connections to the four transformers, all street lights in the area were functioning.

In a news release on Tuesday, the utility company said street lights in the area have been programmed to shut down in the event that there is any breach.

JPS said it will make checks to ensure that the street lights are functioning properly.
