Morant Bay returns to normal following chlorine spill

Clearance has been given for the reopening of  business places and schools in Morant Bay,St. Thomas, following a chlorine spill in the town on Monday morning.
    
This follows a clean up exercise in the afternoon by a team from the National Water Commission (NWC) as well as fire personnel.


Several persons who were affected by fumes after a buried chlorine tank exploded at the Rum Store Plaza , had to seek medical attention. The incident also forced the closure of business establishments and schools .
    
Parish Disaster Coordinator for St. Thomas, Millicent Blake, said some of those affected were rushed to the Princess Margaret Hospital in the parish but there were no serious cases.

She also disclosed that normality has been restored to the town.
“The chlorine cylinder was finally extricated at 1:45pm, so the all clear sign was given…. the smell (of Chlorine) in the area has dissipated somewhat," she said.
