NEPA proposes increased fines for environmental breaches

Persons found in breach of the Natural Resources Conservation Authority (NRCA) Act could in the future face higher fines.

The National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) has prepared draft amendments to the Act which propose increased fines.

The agency says drafting instructions will be submitted to the portfolio ministry by next March.

This follows an analysis of the Wildlife Protection and NRCA Acts which indicated that the current fines were not a deterrent to environmental breaches.

The plan to hike the fines is contained in the Auditor General Department's report on a follow-up audit of NEPA.

The report, which was tabled in the House of Representatives on Wednesday, revealed improvements in the agency's operations.
