Nomination Day concluded

RJR's Noon Newscast, with News Presenter Dorraine Samuels, on Nomination Day

Jamaica's Nomination Day proceedings have now ended, with all the candidates nominated.

The two major political parties - the incumbent People's National Party (PNP) and the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) each had a full slate of 63 candidates nominated. A number of Independent and third party candidates were also nominated.

The traditional carnival like atmosphere attendant on nomination proceedings prevailed in constituencies across the island, as PNP and JLP supporters accompanied their representatives to their nomination centres, in preparation for the February 25 general election.

PNP President Portia Simpson Miller was nominated in her constituency, South West St. Andrew, shortly after 1.00 p.m.

She arrived at the nomination centre about seven minutes earlier, and sprinted into the room.

JLP Leader Andrew Holness was nominated shortly after in West Central St. Andrew, stopping to speak with journalists and, in doing so, proclaimed his confidence, not only in his own chances of re-election, but in the JLP's prospects of returning to government, having been defeated in the 2011 contest.
