Political parties commit to removing political paraphernalia

Following Political Ombudsman Donna Parchment Brown's expression of disappointment that candidates of the two major political parties did not use Labour Day to remove political billboards and paraphernalia, both the People's National Party (PNP) and Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) have committed to removing the items from constituencies.

Paul Burke, General Secretary of the PNP, is urging the party's candidates in the February 25 General Election to remove political billboards and other paraphernalia that remain in constituencies.

Mr. Burke says the Party will remove the billboards and paraphernalia if the candidates fail to remove them this week.

"I'm gonna be urging some of our candidates to get them down this week. If not, by weekend, we'll have to send out a special team to have them removed. But I hope most of our candidates will have their signs removed during the week," he said.

Dr. Horace Chang, General Secretary of the Jamaica Labour Party, made similar declarations, saying the JLP will make arrangements to have the billboards and paraphernalia removed.

"We'll have to investigate how many are up, where they are, and maybe we can get them down. There are (persons) who put them up sometime who are not even candidates, they are individuals who paint over our walls so we'll have to find out where they are, who put them up and give instructions to get them out," he declared.
