The Tredegar Park All Age and Basic Schools in St. Catherine resumed classes on Monday morning following the violence in the community, just before the school went on summer break.

When RJR News visited the schools, parents were observed taking their children to both institutions while heavy security personnel mingled among them.

A teacher, Charlene Fagan, who is also a representative on the school Board told RJR News, the morning proceeded well.

“This morning we had an extended devotion where we had members of a church on Thompson Pen Road came and did a little devotion for us. Our new guidance counselor did something for us as well to boost the morale of the students and get them off to a good start,” Ms. Fagan said.

Violence in Tredegar Park escalated during the summer break when heavily armed men invaded Monkey Town and Back Bush killing eight people.

And teachers at the Tredegar Park Basic school used the opportunity Monday, to offer counselling to students who are still reeling from the recent upsurge in violence in the area.

Principal of the school, Sheila Marsh, explained how the children have been coping, since last month's deadly attack in the community, in which eight persons were killed.

“What we are trying to do today is to just calm the children, trying to assure them that despite what is happening security is here…so we are giving them counselling session today,” Ms. Marsh said.
