Opposition says SoE being used as a crime plan

Opposition spokesman on National Security, Peter Bunting has reasoned that the extension of the State of Emergency should not be seen as a substitute for a national crime plan.

Speaking in the parliamentary debate on the resolution to extend the emergency powers, Mr. Bunting accused the Golding administration of failing to present the country with a credible crime plan.

“The State of Emergency allows the security forces to search entire communities even if they have specific intelligence on a specific house. They search the entire community so as to not expose the source of their intelligence,”

“The second issue is that police can hold suspects…If that is the justification, then that justification would not end in another 30 days, that justification will continue for as long as the police are going to conduct cordon and search operations,” Mr. Bunting said.
