CARICOM warned to choose next secretary general carefully
Former St. Lucia Prime Minister, Dr. Kenny Anthony, has weighed in, on the choice of a new secretary general of CARICOM.
The current Opposition Leader wants regional leaders to tread carefully, in the search for a successor to the retiring Edwin Carrington.
Dr. Anthony describes the outgoing CARICOM Secretary General as an extraordinary man with an incredible passion for the region.
According to him, Professor Carrington came out of a specific period when the regional university in particular helped to produce outstanding public servants imbued with a regional philosophy and a belief in the region.
This, Dr. Anthony says, is no longer the case, which would make finding a replacement even more difficult.
“The reality seems to me that the region is even more fragmented and fractured than what used to be the case years ago. The region is in turmoil. CARICOM has suffered serious credibility crises in the past few months. There is a palpable loss of confidence in the regional integration movement,”
“There are issues regarding the current Heads of Government throughout the region, their own credibility is now at stake. Therefore in that kind of environment you have to be sure,” Dr. Anthony said.
