Guyana’s Opposition calls for stronger party financing laws
As a CARICOM conference on campaign financing wrapped up in Jamaica on Friday, Guyana's main Opposition, the People's National Congress, is calling for legislation to cover more than just how political parties receive and spend money.
Representatives of governing and opposition parties have been discussing model legislation for party financing.
The Opposition leader in Georgetown, Robert Corbin, says the proposed legislation should also take into account government's use of State resources.
“You cannot draft legislation to regulate political parties financing and campaigning without having similar legislation to control how the incumbent government utlises its position when it controls the State treasury. The legislation has to be very wide ranging,” Mr. Corbin said.
