Gatlin edges Frater in men’s 100m
Jamaica’s Michael Frater failed to outshine former sprint champion American Justin Gatlin in the men’s 100 metres at an international meet in Padua, Italy on Friday.
Frater in 10.27 seconds and compatriot Nickel Ashmede in 10.30 seconds, were second and third respectively.
Gatlin won the event in 10.15 seconds.
But Gatlin’s victory was not without drama, as the clock had showed a winning time of 9.81 seconds for the former Olympic 100 metres champion before the time was later adjusted to a more realistic 10.15.
The American recently returned to action last month after a four-year ban, for testing positive for the male sex hormone, testosterone, in 2006.
And Jamaica’s Sherone Simpson took the women’s 100 metres in 11.26 seconds at the meet, finishing ahead of the American Mickel Barber 11.40 seconds.
