J’cans help snag victories for the Americas team
Jamaicans Ricardo Chambers, Shericka Williams and Nickeisha Wilson contributed to the men's and women's mile relay wins for the Americas team as the two-day IAAF Continental Cup concluded in Split, Croatia on Sunday.
Chambers, who placed second in the flat 400 metres on Saturday, proved too strong on the final leg as the Americas team which included Costa Rica's Nery Bresnes and the Americans Bershawn Jackson and Greg Nixon clocked 2 minutes 59.00 seconds breaking the competition record set 29 years ago by the United States.
Wilson, the 400 metre hurdles gold medalists and Williams teamed with American Debbie Dunn and the Bahamian Christine Amertil to win the women’s relay in 3 minutes 26.17 seconds.
This was one hundredth of a second ahead of Europe.
However, Europe had the last laugh, winning the two-day meet with 429 points, nine and a half ahead of the Americas, while Africa took third with 292.
