JA to host CONCACAF U-17 World Cup qualifiers

It may cost up to $100 million for the country to stage the CONCACAF Under-17 World Cup qualifiers in February 2011, after the Jamaica Football Federation’s bid to host the championship was accepted.

However CONCACAF will help offset the cost with an injection of $75 million.

JFF President Captain Horace Burrell made the announcement at Wednesday's launch of the 2010 Schoolboy Football Season at the Terra Nova Hotel.

Burrell says the Federation will throw its full support behind the team in order to get the best possible result.

The CONCACAF Championships are scheduled for February 17 to 28 in western Jamaica, with CONCACAF set to announce which of the three possible venues will be selected.

The new Catherine Hall Sporting Complex, Jarrett Park and the Trelawny multi-purpose stadium are the contending venues.

Wendell Downswell has been named coach of Jamaica's squad.

Jackie Walters and Dean Weatherly led Jamaica to the under-17 World Cup final in 1999 when the country hosted the CONCACAF Championships.

Jamaica hosted again in 2006, and just missed qualifying under now deceased David 'Wagga' Hunt.
