Half centuries by Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane kept India 239-7 in the game by the close of the opening day of the 2nd test against New Zealand in Kolkata.
Pujara was called on again with a knock of 87 and Rahane stroked 77, as the pair rescued the home team with a 4th wicket stand of 141 after reeling at 3-46. New Zealand's fast bowler Matt Henry 3-35 and off spinner Jeetan Patel 2-66 undermined India.
India leads the 3-test series 1-0.
Meanwhile, the Proteas, South Africa, played a powerful game to defeat Australia by six wickets with 82 balls remaining in the 1st One Day International at Centurion Park.
Australia, sent into bat, totalled 294-9 off their 50-overs, as George Bailey 74, John Hastings 51 and David Warner 40 led the scoring against fast bowler Andile Phehlukwayo 4-44.
South Africa then eased to 295-4 off 36.2 overs, as opener Quentin de Kock slammed 178 including 16x4s and 11x6s off 113 balls in 2 hrs and 22 minutes. de Kock partnered with Rilee Roussouw , 63, in a 145 run first wicket partnerships, as Scott Boland took 3-67.
