Jamaica lose in WICB Under-19 title match as Guyana retains crown

When it mattered most, Jamaica's Under-19 cricketers couldn't beat Guyana who have retained the regional title by four wickets in Sunday's final at Manchester High School.

The Jamaicans, who won their opening encounter, tried unsuccessfully to defend 245 runs against the Guyanese on Sunday who reached the target in 46 overs.

The chase was set up by 55 from opener Shimron Hetmeyr,  Sherfane Rutherford made 45 and Kassem Khan 43 to complete victory as the Jamaicans struggled for consistent success with the ball.

Captain Michael Frew who was one of three bowlers to snare a wicket, says while they tried to employ the same tactics which gave them a five wicket victory over Guyana in their preliminary round match.

Frew's Guyanese counterpart, Travis Persaud, underscored that his team was in better shape for the final than when they first met Jamaica.

Even though they wanted to restrict Jamaica for less than 220, they were prepared to chase 300.

Interestingly, Guyana were declared champions ahead of Jamaica last season after the final was abandoned without a ball being bowled.
