Large Jamaican team to Carib Swim Champs

Voice of national swimming coach Gillian Millwood

Jamaica's largest contingent of swimmers in recent memory will attend the Caribbean Islands Swimming Championships from June 29-July 2 in Nassau, Bahamas. The Amateur Swimming Association of Jamaica (ASAJ) has also received a major financial boost.

A twenty four member team including Olympic hopefuls Justin Plashcka, Timothy Wynter and Siddrelle Wiliams have been selected to represent Jamaica at the championships.

Jamaica will be represented in four different age groups, 11-12, 13-14, 15-17 and 18 and over, for both boys and girls.

While much is expected of the overseas based Plashcka, Wynter and Williams, national coach Gillian Millwood revealed that this was largest inclusion of locals in the team in recent years.

The local members of the team were presented at a recent press conference. A high count of 29 medals has been predicted for the team.

“That 29 is the best number we are looking for and that is what our calculations have brought out for us so with the inspiration and excitement of the lighter pool quality that Bahamas is, we are expecting not only best times and age group records but more medals,” said national coach Gilliam Millwood.

Meanwhile, ASAJ Vice President Wendy Lee noted that  the championships  will be used by Plaschka, Wynter and Williams to secure Olympic 'A' qualifying standards.

Williams will compete at the Bahamas National Championships this weekend as he aims to further his Olympic bid.

Meanwhile, with the association struggling to send teams overseas in recent times due to financial constraints, they have received a major boost to its programme from the Petroleum Corporation of Jamaica (Petrojam) which has made a contribution of Ja$1 million.

The local members of the team will depart the island on June 28. Twenty-one countries will take part at the championships.
