Report by RJRGLEANER Communications Group Sports Reporter Kayon Raynor

Athletes around the world can now focus their training for next year’s rescheduled Tokyo Olympic Games starting July 23, 2021. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced the new dates for the global multi-sport event on Monday. President of the IOC Thomas Bach explained that the new dates were reached after consultation with international sports federations, sponsors, broadcasters and the Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee.

The Paralympic Games, originally due to start on August 24, 2020, will now take place between August 24 and September 5, 2021.

Meanwhile, track and field's world governing body, World Athletics has supported the decision made by the IOC to postpone the Olympic Games by a year.

In a release on Monday, World Athletics stated that it would now speak with organizers of the World Championships in Eugene, Oregon to move it from August 2021 to 2022. World Athletics also stated that it will have discussions with the Commonwealth Games Federation to avoid clashes in 2022.
