O'Dayne mines gold in Shot Put!

O’Dayne Richard produced a championship and national record of 21.61 metres to win Jamaica’s first ever gold medal in the Shot Put at the Commonwealth Games this afternoon.  The previous national record of 21.45m was set by Dorian Scott in Tallahasse Florida in March 2008.

It was Jamaica first gold at quadrennial Games and takes the nation’s tally in Glasgow, Scotland to three, after Alia Atkinson’s silver and bronze from the 50m and 100m Breaststroke events.

The 25-year-old improved his personal best of 21.11 metres recorded at the Jamaica International Invitation on May 3 this year, by 50 centi-metres to turn back the challenge of favourite Tom Walsh of New Zealand, who could only manage 21.19 metres.  Tim Nedow of Canada took the bronze with 20.59m, while Jamaica’s other competitor Raymond Brown placed 8th with 18.85m

Richards’ winning mark, which is the fifth best this year, also moves him into the top 50 on the all-time list in the event at joint number 49th along with 49 American Kevin Akins and Denmark’s Joachim Olsen.
