Records tumble as St Mary High retain Eastern Champs title

Nineteen 19 records were broken over two days as St Mary High retained their overall title at the Eastern Athletics Championships which came to an end at the National Stadium on Tuesday. St Mary High dominated proceedings on day two as they made up a 50 and a half point deficit to amass 710 points to the 655.5 Buff Bay were able to score with Titchfield third with 396 points.

The St Mary High team won three of the four sprint relays on the girls side and two of three in the boys' section to turn things around. Class two double champions Abigail Shaffe and Shone Walters played major roles in St Mary High retaining their title. Schaffe won the 400m/400m hurdles double, while her teammate Walters landed the 800 and 1500 metre crowns.

The champions also got impressive performances from Sydonie McIntosh who sped to a class three record of 12.11 seconds in the 100 metres and took second in the 200 metres in 25.45. Garth McDermott of Morant Bay High was named overall champion boy, amassing 27 points while St Mary High's Tamera Howell was named overall champion girl after she tallied 34 points.
