Supreme Soul ante-post favourite for Governor's Cup

2000 Guineas winner Supreme Soul is the 2-5 ante-post favourite to land the 79th running of the Governor's Cup over 10 furlongs on Saturday at Caymanas Park. The event is the last major prep for next month's Jamaica Derby. Winter-book favourite for the Jamaica Derby, Supreme Soul, has worked well since winning the 2,000 Guineas and despite carrying top weight of 126 pounds, should prove hard to contain.

The half brother to former Superstakes winner Bigdaddykool", Supreme Soul has already gone two turns, running the circular 9 course in 1 minute, 55 and three fifths. Unbeaten in four starts, the leading three year old this season will have customary jockey Shane Ellis aboard as his trainer Anthony “Baba” Nunes hunts a fourth Governor's Cup title.

Nunes has two other runners, Earn Your Stripes and Tricky One in the 9 horse field. To be ridden by champion jockey Anthony Thomas, Earn Your Stripes at 117 pounds, has looked good at exercise, beating Supreme Soul twice. However, it's not a good indication of what he'll do on the track as his exercise reports have almost always seen him beat his more experienced stablemates including Bigdaddykool as a two year old .

Tricky One has run the circular 9 course twice and now back over two turns may just upset the applecart. With the absence of Run Thatcher Run, 18-time champion trainer Wayne DaCosta has turned to Jamaica Oaks winner Princess Annie. The three year old bay filly created an upset win over this trip, winning the Oaks by three lengths.

However, only Supreme Soul is heavier than Princess Annie and with her slow oaks winning time, the colts may prove to be too much for her. The other runners in the field are Sentient, Duke, Glitter River, Awesome Aviator and Inspired Miracle. The Governor's Cup is set to be run at 4:55 pm. 12:10 pm is first post for the 10 race card.
