Veteran journalist & Lorraine Fenton to get national awards

Former FIFA referee Ken Chaplin and 2000 Olympic 400 metres   silver medalist Lorraine Fenton are among the 98 Jamaicans to be honoured at this year’s National Honours and Awards on National Heroes Day in October.

Chaplin, a journalist by profession and who was a national referee for 37 years, is among 18 Jamaicans to be conferred with the Order of Distinction commander class.

Chaplin had refereed 14 World Cup and Olympic Games qualifiers in the Caribbean, Canada and Latin America.

Fenton, who won silver medals at the 2001 and 2003 IAAF World Athletic Championships, is also to be awarded the Order of Distinction officer class.

She also ran anchor leg on the Jamaica 4x400m team that took the 2001 IAAF World Athletic Championships gold medals.

Her last medal at a major championship came at the 2005 IAAF World Championships, her fifth appearance at the event.

She reached the semi-finals of the individual 400 metres and won a silver medal in the 4x400 metres relay.

Fenton retired from athletics at age 33 in October 2006.
