World leading time in 100M breaststroke by Atkinson

Beating world record holder Ruta Meilutyte was going to take an exceptional performance, and Alia Atkinson delivered just that in winning the 100 metre breaststroke in Tokyo on Tuesday.

The Jamaican swam a world leading one minute 02.86 seconds in winning, and came within half a second of the world record.

It was the fastest 100-metre breaststroke swum by a Jamaican of either gender.

Atkinson has now won four of five 100 metre breaststroke races on the FINA World Cup circuit this season. Her only defeat was at the hands of a Japanese in Beijing.
