Millions paid out to customers for utilities' service breaches in 2023

Last year, utility providers paid out $212 million to customers for service breaches.

This is a 35 per cent increase over the $157 million paid out in 2022.

Of the total amount for 2023, the Office of Utilities Regulation secured a little over $1.8 million for customers through its intervention on utility complaints.

The National Water Commission accounted for 62 per cent of this sum, the Jamaica Public Service Company Limited, 37 per cent, while FLOW and Dynamic Environmental Management Limited shared the remaining one percent.

The money was applied as a credit to the affected customers' utility accounts.

The remaining payout to customers, approximately $210 million, resulted from breaches of the JPS and NWC Guaranteed Standards.
