Jamaica Labour Party General Secretary Dr. Horace Chang has sought to defend the elevation of former Mayor of Kingston Delroy Williams to one of his deputies.

On Sunday, the Central Executive voted in favour of Senators Charles Sinclair and Delroy Williams being elected as the new deputy general secretaries.

But members of the public are questioning Mr. Williams' elevation given the fact that he lost the Kingston and St. Andrew Municipal Corporation in the February 26 Local Government Election.

Dr. Chang conceded that the concern is valid, but insisted Mr. Williams could not be held solely responsible for the loss.

He highlighted Mr. Williams' strength in field operations, noting his ability to execute and organise.

Mr. Williams, who also defended his selection, outlined a number of by-elections the JLP has won under his tenure as field operator.

He cited the 2013 Cassia Park by-election as well as the 2017 by-election in the St. Mary South Eastern constituency.

In the St. Mary South Eastern by-election, Mr. Williams boasted that, with the help of his Area Council 1, the JLP won the Annotto Bay division for the first time in a parliamentary election.

He said his record of performance is what influenced the delegates at the Central Executive to elevate him to a deputy general secretary.
