Fire chief sends temporary personnel replacements to Trench Town fire station

Commissioner of the Jamaica Fire Brigade, Stewart Beckford

Replacement fire fighters have been deployed to the Trench Town fire station to bolster the team after six of their colleagues were injured on Tuesday morning.

The firefighters were electrocuted while responding to a call that multiple buildings were on fire at Seventh Street in Greenwich Town, St Andrew about 2:17 a.m.

Three of them are considered to be in serious condition, but their injuries are not life threatening and they are expected to make a full recovery.

Commissioner of the Jamaica Fire Brigade, Stewart Beckford confirmed that the injured fire fighters are from the Trench Town station.

Meanwhile, the Jamaica Public Service Company will investigate the electrocution of the six firefighters.

The electrocution is believed to be due to contact with illegal connections.

The light and power company says this persistent illicit extraction of electricity in parts of the country is unacceptable and must be brought to an end.

It says a collaborative approach by stakeholders is required with a renewed emphasis on enforcement of the legal framework to stamp out the practice.
