The government is to allocate $50 million this year to carry out Labour Day projects across the island.

This was disclosed Thursday by Local Government Minister Desmond McKenzie, while he addressed the Portland Municipal Corporation.

He said the funds will be allocated to municipal corporations across the island.

"An emphasis this year will be placed on the disabled. We will be the concentrating efforts in our infirmaries to ensure proper access. It is important that the persons who are physically challenged should not feel intimidated by the lack of access to facilities."

The minister urged building and planning committees of the municipal corporations to "pay attention to building applications, especially those that the public must access, to see that the requisite provisions are in place to facilitate persons who are physically challenged".
