Gov't and transport operators agree to put off April 1 fare increase

By Prince Moore

An agreement has been reached between the government and transport operators for a delay in implementation of the 16 per cent fare increase which was scheduled to take effect on April 1.

Finance Minister Dr. Nigel Clarke, Transport Minister Daryl Vaz, and other officials met with members of the Transport Operators Steering Committee and other transport sector leaders on Thursday to discuss the fare increase.

Dr. Clarke asked the sector for a deferral of the expected 16 per cent rate increase.

He acknowledged that the government recognised the hardships faced by the sector and what a fare increase would mean for their operations.

But Dr. Clarke explained the need to maintain inflation in single digits in order to keep the economy on course, noting that the transportation sector has one of the largest impacts on inflation.

Meanwhile, Mr. Vaz commended the operators for their understanding and their acceptance of the deferral.

He gave his commitment to continue working collaboratively with them to identify and agree other incentives.
