JLP chides Hayles over claims about gov't distribution of water tanks

By Clinton McGregor

The Jamaica Labour Party has condemned statements made by People's National Party Vice President Ian Hayles, which it says have resulted in significant distress and threats against a local businessman in Westmoreland.

In a statement, General Secretary Dr. Horace Chang characterised Mr. Hayles' remarks as "reckless, irresponsible, and callous".

Mr. Hayles, who is the PNP's candidate for Western Westmoreland, recorded videos alleging that the government distributed water tanks disproportionately and with partisan bias under the Black Tank programme.

The JLP argues that these accusations have since been debunked by a businessman who, having purchased tanks for more than half a million dollars, privately, now faces public scrutiny and has received threats due to these claims.

According to Dr. Chang, the affected businessman is deeply disturbed by the allegations. Dr. Chang has called for Mr. Hayles to issue an immediate apology for the misinformation, denounce the threats against the businessman and refrain from what he described as further "irresponsible conduct".

Dr. Chang said the JLP is committed to a fair and transparent implementation of the Black Tank programme, in a bid to alleviate the water shortage throughout the country.
