The National Works Agency (NWA) says flood waters at Hordley Crossing in St. Thomas have receded and the road is again accessible to vehicles.

Heavy rain on Sunday caused the Plantain Garden River to overflow its bank, which resulted in Hordley Crossing and several other roads being flooded.

The inundation prevented some CXC students from getting to St. Thomas Technical High School to write their exams.

Arrangements were made to accommodate the affected students at other examination centres.

NWA Communication Manager Stephen Shaw says studies have been conducted in the area, and these have shown that it will cost millions of dollars to reduce the likelihood of major flooding during heavy rainfall.

"The watershed area for Plantain Garden River that takes water into Golden Grove...is large, huge...and it is going to take multiples of millions to mitigate the kind of water that we would have experienced yesterday," he said, adding that some mitigation work will be done.

Landslide

Meanwhile, the Rowlandsfield main road in St. Thomas has been severely compromised by a major landslide that occurred on Sunday night.

Through the efforts of residents, small vehicles can now use the road.

A team from the National Works Agency visited the area on Monday to conduct an assessment of the damage, and has flagged the area for urgent attention.

NWA Communication Manager Stephen Shaw said users of the road are advised to do so with extreme caution.

He was speaking Tuesday on the Morning Agenda on Power 106.
