OEC reiterates need for security of exam materials amid situation at Steer Town Academy

The Overseas Examinations Commission (OEC) is reiterating its position on the security and management of examination materials, following the decision to boot two staff members at Steer Town Academy in St. Ann.

The institution has been embroiled in controversy after an investigation into a massive Caribbean Examinations Council cheating scandal which involved the leaking of exam papers to several students in the 2022 May/June sitting of Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) Exams.

The school board on Wednesday evening voted to remove Principal Sharn Mongal and exam coordinator Andre Yeeshui after several hearings and a final disciplinary hearing on Tuesday.

Another teacher is also under investigation.

The board's decision follows the OEC's probe into the matter in 2022, out of which the Commission had recommended disciplinary action.

Several charges, including neglect of duty, were laid against the educators.

The OEC, which withheld comment on the decision, said it remains dedicated to upholding integrity and trust, through administering exams under equitable and safe conditions.

Chairman Brian Bennett-Easy also cautioned school administrators about the regional consequences of non-compliance to exam regulations, while urging all schools to become familiar with their responsibilities.

The OEC said it has been strengthening collaboration with the Ministry of Education to improve order and credibility in exam administration for the 2024 assessment season.

During Wednesday's post Cabinet press briefing, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education Dr. Kasan Troupe had indicated that it was the responsibility of the school's board to conduct its hearing and inform the Ministry of the outcome.

She noted that any consequential proceedings will depend on the outcome of the hearing.
