Opposition calls for fulfilment of landfill promise by Government

Opposition Spokesperson on Local Government Natalie Neita Garvey is calling for more action to limit the outbreak of spontaneous fires at the Riverton City disposal site and for its conversion to a proper landfill, as promised.

The National Solid Waste Management Authority [NSWMA] has been contending with a smoke nuisance after extinguishing a blaze at the site last week.

Mrs Neita Garvey contends that the capital city cannot continue to endure the current levels of smoke inhalation on an annual basis as it has major health and business implications.

Several businesses and schools suspended operations last week due to serious air quality issues.

Mrs Neita Garvey noted on Monday that in the past the NSWMA had given many assurances of improved practices in its effort to convert the dump site into a sanitary landfill.

She has called for Local Government Minister Desmond McKenzie to provide an update on plans announced by the Prime Minister some time ago to remove the city dump to a new site, which would provide better conditions for waste disposal.
