S. Korea donates 210 CCTV cameras to enhance policing in Jamaica

Police Commissioner Dr Kevin Blake

Jamaica's surveillance capabilities have been boosted with a gift of 210 closed circuit television cameras from the Government of South Korea.

Police Commissioner Dr Kevin Blake, in response on Tuesday, said the cameras will be integrated into the current Jamaica Eye programme and will augment the work of the police to improve public safety and security.

Dr Blake said the new cameras will align seamlessly with the JCF's comprehensive technology-driven transformation agenda.

The cameras were funded by the Korean Government at a cost of US$400,000.

National Security Minister Dr Horace Chang, in his remarks, also said the government is committed to the digitization of police operations.

Dr Chang noted that the government has embarked on a multi-pronged approach that targets the development of the infrastructure as well as the technological, scientific, and human resources of law enforcement.

He added that this approach to the digital transformation of law enforcement will result in officers having new digital tools as well as technology-enabled capabilities required for increased operational efficiency.

He said, in the case of the JamaicaEye Programme, the cameras are to be integrated into a centralized system that will be of evidentiary quality, which the police will use as evidence in their investigations.
