Accused in Mario Deane case deemed fit for trial

There’s a development in the court case involving the accused in the Mario Deane case, with the court being told on Thursday that Adrian Morgan, one of the accused in the case, has been deemed fit to stand trial, once he remains on medication.

Morgan is said to be mentally ill. He and co-accused Marvin Orr, who is also said to be mentally ill, were further remanded when they appeared in the Montego Bay Criminal Court on Thursday. The men were charged last month following the death of  Deane.

Investigators reported that Deane, who was taken into custody for a ganja spliff, was attacked and severely beaten by prisoners at the Barnett Street lock-up.

He died three days later in hospital.

In Court, the defence applied for the medical journals of the two accused. The attorneys also applied to the court to visit the cell in which Deane was attacked. In addition, they want statements from scene-of-crime investigators.

Senior Superintendent of  Police for St James, Egbert Parkin, will tell the court on October 3, when the attorneys will be allowed to visit the cell.

The prosecution has also been given until October 26 to submit all statements in the matter to the defence.
